So sit back, relax and enjoy! Let's get into round #16.
Rarely does an editorial photoshoot stop me in my tracks and make me do a double take, but the April 2023 cover of Vogue Philippines beauty issue did exactly that - and if you've stumbled across it I'm sure you had the same response. This shoot is making waves for all the right reasons as it features Apo Maria "Whang Od" Oggay, a 106-year-old tattoo artist who practices a centuries-old style of indigenous tattooing, and has become the oldest person to be on any cover of Vogue ever. In a world obsessed with youth, this cover was a bold statement against conventional beauty standards and is a reminder that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
We're used to seeing street style from the typical fashion month circuit - New York, London, Milan and Paris - but Tokyo street style is arguably on another level. It's fearless, it's striking, and it's making me rethink the way I think about and approach getting dressed.
So there's another fashion vibe shift happening and that's with luxury logos. Where once luxury logos were the thing of the moment, the type of thing eagle eyes fashionistas wanted to drown themselves in, now a shift towards stealth wealth and quiet luxury is seeing logos go low-key.
As newbie creative directors take over at luxury fashion houses, typical luxury brand identifiers are undergoing something of a makeover and new visual codes and signatures are reviving heritage luxury brands for a new wave of consumers.
Six students from the Central Saint Martins MA Class of 2023 unpack their final collections, with an accompanying film that is representative of the entire fashion design pathway and MA Fashion Communication course at CSM. Yaku Stapleton's manipulation of the human form and Jean Flogie's whimsical nature feel stand out to me.
Beyonce and Olivier Rousteing have teamed up on a collection for Balmain called Renaissance Couture. It's a collection of looks that honour the legacy of the luxury fashion house, and the artistry of the superstar that is Beyonce. The musician has also ended her partnership with Adidas.
Aldi aldi aldi, a genius affordable supermarket brand that's taking cues from the high fashion playbook to ensure that its fashion line sold out thanks to social media prowess, parodying iconic ad campaigns and editorial photoshoots.
The world of fashion and food collide once again, with a new Prada Caffè opening in Harrods (from 31 March 2023 – 7 January 2024) that features a picture-perfect and luxurious foodie fashion experience designed by the Italian brand. Think mint green aesthetic, candy-box decor and signature Italian dishes.
Sky High Farm Workwear has collaborated with fashion brands such as Converse and Balenciaga to raise funds for a non-profit enterprise in New York that helps to feed families in need. As Vogue Business puts it, is this the blueprint for a new kind of purpose-driven brand?
Lana Del Rey merchandise ranges from coke spoon necklaces to racing jackets and more, and it's this off-kilt approach to merch that sees her fandom reign supreme.
Oh, Pamela. I, for one, am so happy you're entering your it-girl era on your terms. Anderson is a delight to behold for the March 2023 issue of Interview Magazine, photographed by Petra Collins.
Chopova Lowena is a brand I've had my eye on for a while - I remember using one of their pleated skirts that feature upcycled tartan tablecloths and vintage Bulgarian wall hangings on a shoot a few years ago before they went big. The brand is really in its cult appeal era and for good reason so do check them out.
Puma is going big on Web3. To celebrate its 75th anniversary it announced an upcoming, 10,000-strong PFP NFT project and it's focusing on building its fashion and web3 communities. “For us, web3 is far from a marketing trend,” said Adam Petrick, Puma’s chief brand officer told Glossy. “We see it as a way to develop deeper and more meaningful relationships with our consumers.”
Fashion is turning back the clocks and people are mining the internet and scouring second-hand sites for handbags released in the past decade or so. Is it due to nostalgia? Or people wanting to buy sustainably and opt into the luxury market at a more affordable price point?
Adidas got into a hot spot of bother recently. On March 28, stories broke about the brand suddenly bringing a copyright suit against the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation as the foundation recently applied to trademark its yellow, three-striped logo. But they backtracked and pulled a 180 as quickly as the news went viral.
