All The Vibes: #17
Martha Stewart on Sports Illustrated, cargo pants are now cool and Louis Vuitton’s going big and bold
Whether it's runway shows, magazine editorials, social media posts, street style, nostalgic trends, fashion news, brand collaborations, new collection drops or cool ad campaigns; ‘All The Vibes’ is a place where I let you know all of the fashionable things that should be on your radar.
So sit back, relax and enjoy! Let's get into round #17.
You'd have never guessed it, but your latest Sports Illustrated cover star is none other than Martha Stewart. You read that right. 81-year-old businesswoman, writer, TV personality and Snoop Dogg's bestie Stewart is the oldest person to be featured on the cover of the magazine's bathing suit issue. Does the cover break barriers as the industry would have you believe? No. But what it does do is send a wider message about ageing and hopefully trigger some important conversations in the process.
Michael Jordan may have retired from basketball years ago but being the legend that he is, he's still managing to break records. This time around, an infamous pair of Air Jordans worn by the NBA superstar when he played for the Chicago Bulls have officially sold for $2.2 million according to Sotheby's.
Speaking of Michael Jordan, I watched the new Air movie that charts the founding of the footwear partnership between Nike and the basketball star and I was actually into it (even if it was directed by Ben Affleck). In terms of costume design, it felt quite nostalgic, which was a no-brainer given that it was set in the 80s.
How does a 74-year-old Japanese sportswear brand become relevant and cool to a new generation of sneakerheads? Well, TikTok and Hf Twitter — that's High Fashion Twitter — may have a part to play in Asics cooler-than-cool renaissance. Also, its collaborations with Cecilie Bahnsen and countless celebs wearing the brand have helped a 'lil.
Over the past few years, it seems like we've seen brand after brand go green and launch sustainability and eco-focused initiatives and brand campaigns, but Coach is taking this one step further with Coachtopia, a line of apparel and accessories crafted predominantly from recycled materials designed to last. This is a step up from the brand's pre-loved program that launched in 2021 where Coach accepts used products as trade-ins for credit or gives items a second life in other ways.
Erykah Badu stands out and for good reason. Photographed by Nick Sethi at her home in Dallas, Texas for SSENSE and styled by Becky Akinyode, the editorial spread cements the musician's status as a notable style icon and fashionable figure. Badu has also co-designed a collection with Marni that'll feature bold colours and graphic design, which makes perfect sense for the star and the brand.
The hottest fashion item that eagle-eyed fashionistas are dying to get their hands on? Well, that's none other than a corset hoodie. Bad Bunny donned one for his performance at Coachella, and Casey Cadwallader, creative director at Mugler, has popularised the hot ticket item and is bringing it into the mainstream with the H&M collab that sold out this week.
Cargo pants are having their moment and I'm not ashamed to say I'm now the proud owner of a couple of pairs of cargos - they are versatile and comfortable beyond belief. Anyways, this once-forgotten trend has been dusted off so pack away your skinny jeans as it's time to embrace a baggier silhouette.
A whole lotta LV love today. Nicolas Ghesquière recruited Squid Game's Hwang Dong-Hyuk to stage the Pre-Fall 2023 runway's scenography, and the Netflix show's star, Hoyeon Jung, opened the show. Vuitton also released a surprise collection for Pharrell's Something In The Water Festival, launched elevated exercise accessories, released a campaign starring footballer Lionel Messi, debuted Zendaya as its latest brand ambassador, and its ‘Art of Living: Sport and Games’ collection is a wonder to behold for fans of the brand with deep pockets.
Kylie Jenner fronts Jean Paul Gaultier's latest campaign and to be honest, it's a total yawn fest. Where's the drama? The daring? The intrigue? Give me something I haven't seen before or don't bother.
I'm not an art connoisseur or anything like that but I'm definitely a fan of Takashi Murakami and his style of work. So I was more than pleased to see him star in the Middle East edition of GQ, also a big fan of the work Ahmad Ali Swaid has been doing at the title since he moved there from Dazed Media.
Now here's a core I can get behind, all hail the era of Sandlercore. In 2021 and 2022 Adam Sandler topped Google’s Year in Search lists for celebrity outfits, with his array of loud bowling shirts, brash polo shirts, silk tracksuit bottoms and longline shorts embraced by fans all over the world. I may as well come clean, I just bought a vintage pair of Nike basketball shorts that Sandler would be proud of. Am I part of the gang now?
i-D has declared that the return of normie fashion marks a cultural reset, one where minimal and functional garments are winning favour over loud meme-worthy designs. The increasing popularity of outdoorsy brands Salomon and Arc'Teryx have also elevated normcore and gorpcores' aesthetic appeal.
It sucks to be in the magazine and editorial industry these days with a lack of funding causing many leading titles and publications to shutter completely. The latest casualty is Paper Magazine which laid off all of its editorial staff in April, as the publication was founded 40 years ago this closure in particular signals the end of an era.
Is anyone else ready for the Victoria's Secret fashion show to be over and done with, especially as Savage x Fenty has done what it tried and failed to do to great acclaim? Like it or not, the brand is reinventing its annual show so we haven't seen the back of it just yet.
