Maggie Smith, aka Professor McGonagall, for Loewe is exactly the kind of nostalgic fashion trip the girlies needed. We can all learn a thing or two from the way the 88-year-old poses, but best of all I think this is a great example of how brands can utilise cross-generational icons in their ad campaigns.
Colm Dillane, KidSuper founder and designer, is one of those creative minds I'd love to sit down and have a coffee with — so if he ever reads this, my inbox (and door) is open. Anyways, his career trajectory is pretty interesting having gone from studying math to collaborating with the likes of Louis Vuitton. And I'm really into the fact that he envisions physical retail spaces as an embodiment of his ideas, so hopefully brick and mortar retail won't disappear entirely in the near future.
I've got Japan on my brain as I'm heading to Kyoto and Tokyo in spring next year, so I was really glad to read about a new Tokyo fashion festival that aims to revitalise Japan’s retail industry (even if I won't actually be going to this as its sets to take place annually in November). Tokyo Fashion Crossing will be held every year and will level up the city's cultural cachet, making it one of the next big fashion destinations we should be keeping an eye on.
Any other fashion fans out there who remember Jenna Lyon from her J Crew days? Well, this is her now. Whew. Finding a second lease of life by starring in The Real Housewives of New York City, Lyons is bringing a different look to the reality TV scene.
Founded by designer Danial Aitouganov and stylist Imruh Asha, zomer is a new brand that takes a childlike approach to fashion and is nothing short of sweet and gleeful. With Aitouganov having worked under Natacha Ramsay-Levi at Chloé and then Riccardo Tisci at Burberry, and Asha being a leading industry stylist and fashion director at Dazed, I am sure we can expect fun things from this brand.
According to Protein Evolution, 88% of Americans are at least somewhat likely to choose recycled clothing over new while 86% believe clothing made from recycled materials is just as durable as clothes made from virgin materials. Repreve, the world's number-one brand of recycled performance fibre, is transforming post-consumer waste into materials such as specialised recycled polyester and has worked with the likes of Patagonia and more.
The latest rounds of British Vogue covers were pretty epic. Not only did you have Kate Moss and her mini-me Lila Moss pose together in a pretty chic mum and me spread, but you also had UK rap and grime icon Stormzy feature solo on the front cover of the December issue — worth noting that he's the first British man to do so.
Let's take a trip down memory lane real quick. In 2020, Lululemon created a new department in the wake of the murder of George Floyd to improve internal DE&I and create a more equitable playing field for minorities. But fast forward to 2023 and the Business of Fashion has just published a piece where interviews conducted over a year reveal that for the $50 billion yoga lifestyle juggernaut, being Black is 'off-brand'. If you're surprised by this, then I'm afraid you are part of the problem.
In big media news, supermodel Karlie Kloss has acquired i-D Magazine from bankruptcy-plagued media giant Vice Media. But what I find really interesting is the resurgence of niche and independent print fashion publications that offer a countercultural view to the mainstream, such as the sleazy, hedonistic mag that's the brainchild of curator Jamie Brett and Jaded London.
