All The Vibes: #8
The GOAT's retirement, men wearing skirts and shoes made out of recycled dildos
Whether it's runway shows, magazine editorials, social media posts, street style, nostalgic trends, fashion news, brand collaborations, new collection drops or cool ad campaigns; ‘All The Vibes’ will be a place where I let you know all of the fashionable things that should be on your radar.
So sit back, relax and enjoy! Let's get into round #8.
It's true what they say, the GOAT is retiring. I learnt a lot about Serena Williams that I never knew reading this Vogue article, and I'm really excited about where she's heading next. I love that she's doing her on her own terms, and I appreciate her honesty and candour throughout this piece. One other thing I really, really appreciate, is a photographer (in this case Luis Alberto Rodriguez) who knows how to correctly like Black bodies. That + sensual clothing + serene landscape = a stunning shoot.
Dazed and Versace had a star-studded party with installations and glamour in an abandoned warehouse in LA, and it's everything you'd expect it to be and more.
Okay, so we know celebrities are getting more experimental on the red carpet, that's nothing new. But does Brad Pitt wearing a skirt have a business agenda? Or is he just experimenting with his style and not giving a damn what anyone else thinks? Refinery29 wrote in September last year about how men are now shopping for skirts more, but as they put it, is the world ready?
Balenciaga is selling a $1790 trash bag, and I actually have no words.
Archive garments are making their way onto red carpets thanks to vintage retailers and dealers - hello Kim K Met Gala Marilyn Monroe drama - but being able to repurpose something in such a way can give old wardrobes a whole new lease of life.
Legend, icon, fashion hero Issey Miyake has passed. His design ethos was hugely inspirational, and his fine art aesthetic mixed with his Japanese background and origami techniques made fine artwork out of typical clothing, transforming them into otherworldly creations. I love Linda Evangelista by Irving Penn in Issey Miyake for an issue of Vogue in 1992, and even more than that I love Robin Williams in an Issey Miyake parachute bomber jacket at the premier of Flubber. But did you know Miyake was behind Steve Jobs infamous black turtleneck look? Well, now you know.
Shoes made out of recycled dildos? Brands are definitely getting experimental with their materials and fabric choices, I give them that. Retailing for $130 from Rose In Good Faith in the US if you’re interested.
More Ye drama, because when is there not any Ye drama? He definitely wasn't for adidas’s Yeezy day, and the Yeezy x Gap x Balenciaga collab may have taken a long time to hit our shelves, but it was definitely a success.
You know one thing that defies inflation? Costco’s £1.50 hot dog and soda combo. I tried it out so you don't have too, and it's actually pretty good. One thing that Costco is also ramping up? Its fashion offerings. On TikTok, #costcoclothing has over 1.4 million views which is largely fuelled by people looking for affordable fashion as the rising cost of living continue to squeeze.
Continuing on Virgil Abloh’s legacy, The Brooklyn Museum have teamed up with Instagram on an exhibition that highlights and helps emerging Black creatives within the industry.
Sahib Singh, a four-year-old digital creator, won hearts by starring in Burberry’s AW ’22 children's campaign. He's the first model to wear a patka in the labels official imagery, and it's nice to see representation move beyond (what I hope) is tokenistic gestures.
Loewe campaigns do it for me everytime. I don't know what it is, they just always seem to get it right. The right balance of fashion, the right level of authenticity, the right style of photography that doesn't look too obviously overstaged. Japanese director, actor, comedian, artist, and Takeshi’s Castle host Takeshi Kitano is their latest muse, and for someone who likes to live his life out of the limelight, this is a pretty big scoop.
Self-proclaimed fashion outsider Christopher Kane has a new exhibition opening at Galerie Gugging in Vienna, and is showing paintings of his own this summer in a series called Curated by Christopher Kane, made during the early days of the pandemic.
What are these non-shoes, and why are they a thing? What even is a non-shoe, if you have to put it on your foot to go outside then surely it's a shoe right? I don't get it.Â
Apparently, The Sopranos is one of the greatest movies (or TV shows, I really don't know) of all time. I clearly haven't watched it, but I'm very much on board with their fashion choices and style. HighSnobiety explores five style tips we could all learn from Silvio Dante from The Sopranos.
