Anatomical Skeleton Vests + Head-Turning Jewels And Gems
Cute but trashy Y2K fits, Swatch watches that are a 90s baby throwback, citrus Jacquemus vibes and more
Welcome to ICYMI, an ad hoc edition of the Fashion Tingz newsletter that's part curated product guide, part events you need to know about, part fashion places you should visit… but mostly it's a place to delve into all that good ol’ fashion stuff.
As an ex-fashion editor and personal stylist, I see a lot of cool fashion shit floating around the digital depths of the Internet.
Now, this stuff may seem kind of out there, kind of obscure, or kind of boring — it all depends on who you ask.
This isn’t your typical fashion listicle encouraging you to buy stuff you don’t need. I see this as a curated guide of products, places or events I feel drawn to whether mainstream fashion peeps like it or not.
Welcome to ICYMI.
The mood of these curated guides will ebb and flow depending on whatever’s going on in the fashion realm, and whatever I’m vibing with. Either way, it’s all that good good.
On today's agenda:
Anatomical skeleton vests that are a big, boney flex
Denim corset dresses worthy of a head turn and finger snap
Shoe-tossing hoop earrings for all the hip-hop loving girlies and guys
Cute but trashy Y2K denim star tops that are very va va voom
And a ton more.
These GCDS pants have me in a chokehold. I don't know what it is about them, but I am invested. Maybe it's the two-tone, faded worn-in leather look, maybe it's the buckles at the bottom that allow you to change the cut and fit (clever), or maybe it's the GCDS zipper which I also think is a nice touch. It's Steampunk meets Mad Max meets dieselpunk and that's hot.
Ok ok ok, now this skeleton vest is dope. Do you see it? Like, do you see it see it? I stumbled across this gem when I was in a scrolling pit of doom, and I'm glad I discovered this piece. It's exactly what I imagine the modern-day version of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride would wear. I can't find anything about the designer Satoshi Nakamoto anywhere online, so if you know something or can point me in the right direction slide into my inbox please and thank you.
This is the type of dress that'll make people stop and stare. This is the type of dress that deserves a second, third, fourth and fifth look. And this is the type of dress that those who get it, get it, and those who don't, don't. I'm talking about the stonewash denim corset dress from the Jean Paul Gaultier x KNWLS link-up. Inspired by the cone dress from the JPG archives this is a number to flex in.
It was hard to choose a favourite from the Jimmy Choo x Jean Paul Gaultier shoes collection, but if I could walk away with anything it'd be these over-the-knee brown leather boots that feature an archival tattoo print. Luxury brand collabs are everywhere these days, but what works about this pairing is that you can see each separate brand identity come together seamlessly. And thats how it's done.
This brown HUF x Toyota jacket is really giving vroom vroom, motocore, Formula One but make it trending vibes — and I'm not mad at it. Motorsport culture and the world of racing have entered the fashion space which is giving us collections like this. And this off-road, brown design is in a silhouette that's just the right size.
I tried to get my hands on something from the latest Jacquemus x Nike drop, added myself to the waitlist and clicked on buy as soon as the email hit my inbox... and nothing. What I wanted was the brown sweatshirt with the orange peel tick, but what stood out to me was the orange JF1 shoe colourway that gives off citrus vibes.
When I was a menswear stylist, one brand I used to love to style with was London-based fine jewellery label Bleue Burnham. They're like the UK version of Aimé Leon Dore but in the luxury bling space. Think timeless quality rather than being trend-led, think cultural clout without the hypey nature. I love this signet ring from their AW23 collection that has multiple colours of sapphires in it and sides with contrasting textures. Super dope.
As the saying goes, the bigger the hoop the bigger the hoe. And these hoops by Homage Year are pretty damn big and clever. Every design has a sociopolitical message behind it, and these hoops are inspired by the shoe-tossing seen in designer Antoine Mannings' childhood which is an act of remembering someone who's passed away. It's a way to let loved ones live on, and that's pretty damn beautiful.
It's cosy season. I repeat, it's cosy season. And nothing says cosy more than this blue knitted fleece polo from Patagonia. I have to admire how Patagonia is in its fashion girlie era, going from an American outdoor retailer to a brand the masses will queue up and fight over. Kudos.
This clear Swatch watch is just so sleek and hipster and James Bond if he lived in Hoxton and rode a bicycle with a basket on the front. I'm not sure how easy it'd be to tell the time with this, but that's what phones are for anyway. Swatch watches used to be a huge deal in the '90s and '00s when I was growing up so this throwback style feels a little nostalgic, and I'm glad they're being given another chance to shine.
I don't own a pair of ASICS even as a self-confessed sneaker lover, and I'm thinking I should change that. This GEL-Cumulus 15 pair was released in 2013 but with fashion trends doing their cyclical loop the colours, intricate web-like look and style of the shoe make it feel current. I did a little digging and this sneaker was such a big hit that it won an Editors Choice award from Runner's World and I love that for them.
This one is for the ho ho ho's. I'm joking, kind of. This light denim star top by ABL ESTUDIO, a brand based in Monterrey, Mexico, is made from recycled denim sewn with contrasting white stitches and it's cute. Cute but slightly trashy. As in the kind of thing you'd wear so everyone can see how good your rack looks, but who's judging?
You should stop by…
London: the British Fashion Council has debuted a new exhibition at the Design Museum in London that pieces together Alexander McQueen's AW93 Taxi Driver collection. Showing until February 2024, it's a great chance to get a look at the inspiration and legacy behind one of the designer's first collections after graduating from Central Saint Martins’ in 1992.
Seoul: MSCHF has debuted its first-ever museum retrospective, titled NOTHING IS SACRED, hosted at the Daelim Museum in Seoul until March 2024. It features a collection of over 100 works spanning styles and mediums in a bid to push ideas, challenge social and cultural norms, and is both playful and provocative.
London: Tyler, the Creator's brand GOLF WANG has opened a new store in London and the rapper and producer touched down this side of the pond for the opening. It’s set up shop in Soho, so I'm sure it'll be a haven for streetwear lovers and fans of the musician that like to hang in the area.
Antwerp: work by Simone Rocha, Louise Bourgeois, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and more will be on display at a new exhibition in Antwerp at MoMu. Delving into the relationship between clothing and memory and showing until February 2024, Echo: Wrapped in Memory explores the potent power of the mind and how this is distilled into clothing, art and dance.
