Shein scorpions and dead cockroaches, an underwhelming Victoria's Secret fashion show and the luxury con

It's a place to discover the news you may have missed and peek behind the scenes to see wtf has been going on in fashion recently.
Let’s get into round #34.
I hate to say it, but I think fashion brands are taking us for a ride in more ways than one.
Luxury brands are conning us by continuing to increase prices without improving quality or product range. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…
Fast fashion labels are adding unexpected extras to orders in the form of scorpions and dead cockroaches.
And nostalgic noughties brands are desperately trying to regain relevance with try-hard runway shows that push exclusionary aesthetic standards and body ideals.
At some point, we have to take responsibility and put our money where our mouth is by either stopping shopping at certain places or calling brands out when they do wrong.
Not that it’ll change anything in the long run, but if we don’t take a stand in the here and now, how can we ever expect fashion to do better?
Brand chit chat
Moncler Genius taps new co-creators: I’m always intrigued to see who Moncler pluck out of the pop culture sphere to work with on their Genuis sub-brand, and for The City of Genius takeover in Shanghai they’ll be working with A$AP Rocky, NIGO, Donald Glover, Rick Owens and more.
Lacoste x the Great Wall of China: in a tribute to brand ambassador and tennis star Novak Djokovic, Lacoste had the Great Wall of China as a backdrop for one of the largest fashion sports events ever organised. The UNESCO World Heritage site was lit up green as far as the eye could see.
Signet Sunday is for the finance bros: a finance bro creator launched a brand, once he’d amassed a sizeable following, that made £100,000 in its first 2 hours, and it took off because he nailed aspirational satire that speaks to an IYKYK community. And that’s how you nail catering to your audience’s needs.
News you might have missed
The Met Gala’s 2025 theme: for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2025 spring gala, the theme is ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ paying tribute to the history of the Black dandy and diasporic identities. A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton and Pharrell Williams will co-chair.
Luxury brands are conning us: since 2019, luxury brand prices have been steadily rising. According to the British bank HSBC, today’s luxury prices are on average 54% higher than pre-Covid, and they continue to climb. But the quality isn’t getting any better, so is the joke on us?
Shein’s scorpion saga: how’s this for an added extra? A Bristol University student found a scorpion roaming around her Shein package, and just days later a woman found a dead cockroach inside her Shein order. Maybe it’s time to reevaluate where we spend our hard-earned dollars.
Icon moments and eye-roll behaviour
Prada goes to the moon: in interstellar news, the first woman and person of colour to set foot on the moon will be dripped out in Prada. According to NASA, this very moment could happen as soon as September 2026 (fingers crossed). That’s one small step for mankind, one giant leap for Prada.
Chonga maximalists are forever fashionable: chongas may conjure up images of lip liner, skinny eyebrows, big hoops and red lipstick, but it goes deeper than that. Depending on who you talk to, the definition may vary, but if one thing is for sure, it’s that chongas have a long-lasting aesthetic influence.
Victoria’s Secret is back from the dead: yes, Kate Moss, 50, and Carla Bruni, 56, made their debuts, and Alex Consani and Valentina Sampaio made history as the first trans models to walk. But is this all lip service in an attempt to appease us and remain relevant? The VS show still pushed its preferred, slim aesthetic, claiming it’s for all women when I doubt that’s the case.
