Fashion Stays Unhinged And Chaotic

If you didn’t know you needed to know these fashion tidbits, well, now you know.
It's a place to discover the news you may have missed and peek behind the scenes to see wtf has been going on in fashion recently.
Let’s get into round #36.
Fashion in 2024 was less about trends and more about a collective cry for attention, resembling a bizarre group project where no one read the instructions.
It was confusing. It was chaotic. And it was a lawless free-for-all.
Take, for example, the fact that a viral baby pygmy hippo has been named a 2024 style icon.
Add in the creative director merry-go-round circus, where these top-level jobs are spitting one in and one out faster than a revolving door — so much so that it’s hard to keep up.
To top this off, we now have unofficial shooter merch which resembles a warped sense of fandom and allegiance.
As the chaos bleeds into 2025, one thing is clear: fashion isn't dead — it’s just stress-testing our capacity for confusion.
Brand chit chat
Louis Vuitton announces Murakami collab: when I visited Tokyo back in April, I knew one thing I wanted to leave with was a vintage piece from the LV x Murakami collab, and that I did. After being discontinued in 2015, I can’t wait to see what comes of this high fashion high flex link up this time around.
Dazed Magazine launches in the Middle East: I love to see publications, especially print media, expand to become more culturally relevant and regionally focused. It’s incredible to see Dazed Media and ITP Media Group launch Dazed MENA in winter 2024, run by the sweetest Ahmad Ali Swaid.
Versace brings back Biggie’s sunglasses: “Biggie, Biggie, Biggie, can't you see?” is the stuff of hip-hop legend, and if you want to adopt The Notorious B.I.G.’s swag, Versace is bringing back his iconic shades. The legacy lives on, with Sabrina Carpenter and Alexandre Dam SARR fronting the campaign.
News you might have missed
Creative director musical chairs continue: John Galliano exits Maison Margiela after 10 years. Matthieu Blazy is now in at Chanel. Louise Trotter departs Carven for Bottega, and is the only female helming a Kering-owned brand — these were just some of the 1,789 creative director changes this year.
Luigi Mangione merch has arrived: well, I didn’t see this one coming. But the internet did its thing and now we have Luigi Mangione, aka the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter, merch. This level of standom sums up the chaotic year that 2024 has been in a nutshell. It’s a lot to take in.
2025 colour of the year? Mocha Mousse: I would never have guessed it, especially after the chokehold Brat green had on 2024, but Pantone has announced its 2025 colour of the year: Mocha Mousse. I’m not sure this shade will define the zeitgeist next year as it’s very blah, but let’s wait and see.
Icon moments and eye-roll behaviour
Moo Deng is a 2024 style icon, we stan: I know an it girl when I see one, and in 2024 that reigning queen was the baby pygmy hippo Moo Deng — who has been named on The New York Times 63 most stylish people of 2024 list. Others included Colman Domingo, Chappell Roan, Ayo Edebiri and more.
LFW bans exotic animal skins: starting in early 2025, London Fashion Week is banning wild animal skins from its runways, building on last year’s formal restriction on fur. Brands wishing to feature on the event’s official schedule must pledge not to include these materials in their collections, your honour.
Squabble Up style is West Coast pride: trust K-Dot to showcase West Coast pride in his Squabble Up music video. From Kendrick’s Dodger-blue hoodie to nods to Soul Train fashion, Bay Area Hyphy attire, East LA Cholo and Loc culture and a homage to the Williams sisters, it was a feast for the eyes.
