Fashion Tingz: Agony Aunt #4
Post-pandemic fashion sense, capsule wardrobes and business casuals
Each month I’ll be tackling whatever unsolved fashion scenarios you send my way. These scenarios can be lighthearted and fun or deep and personal, the choice is entirely yours. Let’s tackle these things together. Remember to be kind in the comments, everyone’s experience of the world - and the way we view it - is different.
Question one: My look and approach to fashion has changed over the course of the pandemic, and I’m not really sure who I am anymore and what I want to dress like. I’m no longer certain about what I want my clothes to communicate to the world around me, and I’ve given up on fashion and having a sense of style altogether. Do you have any advice on how to navigate these crappy and uncertain feelings?
It’s weird isn’t it? How time has felt like it’s all blended into one and no one has any real concept of how to go about doing things anymore. Very ordinary, very mundane things such as getting dressed can make us feel as if we have a mountain to climb. Who we are now, versus who we were before the pandemic began, well these people probably look completely different - and that’s okay. If anything, I’d be surprised if you had emerged from this unscathed. Fashion is a funny thing; sometimes we put a lot of thought into it and sometimes we don’t. Sometimes it makes us feel good and sometimes - when we feel as if we don’t get right - it can make us feel like utter crap. I’ve worked in the fashion industry for well over a decade now, and I still have days like this all the time. Crappy and uncertain feelings will most likely always be around, but fashion may be able to give you a much needed boost as and when you need it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d concentrate on focusing less on what you want your clothes to communicate to the world and more on how they make you feel. By doing that, and by concentrating on the positive feelings your sense of style can evoke, hopefully it’ll be a start on reclaiming your fashion sense for you, and you only.
