Plot Twists, Power Moves & Closet Confessions
Drama upon drama in fashion, but do you expect anything less?
News Bites is a space to get the lowdown on what the f*ck has been going on in fashion recently. Good, bad, and everything in between — this is where it's at.
Currently, fashion is a little chaotic.
Luxury empires are shifting hands while indie labels reclaim their thrones, and your lost Doc Martens might sail into the never to be seen again abyss.
In one corner, Prada just dropped €1.25 billion to scoop up Versace, forming the most glamorous Italian power couple since spaghetti met meatballs. In another, Ambush founders Yoon Ahn and VERBAL are taking back the keys to their Tokyo label — because independence is always en vogue.
Meanwhile, Justin Bieber’s quietly ghosting Drew House (RIP smiley face) and cryptically teasing SKYLRK. And speaking of cryptic, Uber’s latest lost-and-found report reads like a Gen Z fashion bingo card: Aritzia puffers, J.Crew blazers, and enough Birkenstocks to start a commune.
Across the globe, fashion’s edges are where the real heat is: Kendrick Lamar’s Chanel ambassadorship has fans divided (Drake, blink twice if you’re okay), Japan’s high-rise uniforms are now runway ready, and New Zealand’s underground fashion week is entering the fray.
Brace yourself as this season is full of plot twists.
Brand chit chat
Prada bought Versace, no big deal: in a landmark move for the fashion world, Prada Group has officially acquired fellow Italian luxury house Versace for €1.25 billion, following months of negotiations. This historic acquisition marks a powerful union between two of Italy’s most iconic fashion brands.
Ambush founders take back ownership: Ambush is the latest brand to part ways with the struggling New Guards Group. Founders Yoon Ahn and VERBAL have regained full ownership of the Tokyo-based label and are now back to being fully independent, which is something we love to see.
Bieber cut ties with Drew House: in case you needed a little pop culture meets fashion history lesson, Justin Bieber started his label Drew House in 2019, as celebs are known to do. But in recent weeks, he’s publicly cut ties with the brand and has cryptically started teasing his new venture, SKYLRK.
Headlines you might have missed
Protect the dolls: it’s been a hot minute since a slogan t-shirt caused such a stir, but considering the current state of play, it makes sense. Worn by Conner Ives for his AW25 show finale and donned by Troye Sivan, Pedro Pascal and more, it’s a call to action to protect the trans community.
Uber’s lost and found index is a goldmine: Uber’s 2025 lost and found report is full of juicy stuff riders have mistakenly left behind. On the fashion front? Think: Doc Martens, a Kate Spade purse, Timberlands, Aritzia puffer jackets, Birkenstock slides, J.Crew blazers and more.
Where are the good sales? In our closets, apparently: the closet sale has become a bona fide fixture in New York’s shopping scene. These days, celebrities, influencers, stylists, Substackers and podcasters are cashing in on the resale rush. Its rise speaks volumes about today’s retail landscape.
Icon moments and eye-roll behaviour
Kendrick Lamar’s new Chanel gig is divisive: adding another string to his bow, K Dot has landed one of fashion’s most lucrative ambassadorships at Chanel — to which Drake must be crying into his pillow. The jury’s still out on this, but I’m interested to see whether or not this link-up will pay off.
Japanese construction uniforms are high fashion: from dizzying scaffolds in Japan to Parisian runways, traditional workwear like nikkapokka pants and tabi boots have traded tool belts for trend reports. Once the uniform of high-rise heroes and craftsmen, these utilitarian staples are getting a second act.
New Zealand’s underground fashion week: Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa (@ahuaaotearoa) is the underground fashion week that's rewriting runway rules in New Zealand. Less glossy elitism, more raw talent — this creative uprising is all about spotlighting the next wave of underground design.
