Wearing Your Heart On Your Head (Not Your Sleeve) + Dicey Vegas Watches
Trapper hat season but make it upcycled, Ariel's out-from-under-the-sea hair clips, villainess era Mirror Palais dresses and more
Welcome to ICYMI, an ad hoc edition of the Fashion Tingz newsletter that's part curated product guide, part events you need to know about, part fashion places you should visit… but mostly it's a place to delve into all that good ol’ fashion stuff.
As an ex-fashion editor and personal stylist, I see a lot of cool fashion shit floating around the digital depths of the Internet.
Now, this stuff may seem kind of out there, kind of obscure, or kind of boring — it all depends on who you ask.
This isn’t your typical fashion listicle encouraging you to buy stuff you don’t need. I see this as a curated guide of products, places or events I feel drawn to whether mainstream fashion peeps like it or not.
Welcome to ICYMI.
The mood of these curated guides will ebb and flow depending on whatever’s going on in the fashion realm, and whatever I’m vibing with. Either way, it’s all that good good.
On today's agenda:
Trapper hats to survive the winter but make it Hoxton guy friendly (IYKYK)
OTT pimped out Vans for all the skater girlies and guys
Dicey parody watches that'll have you cutting shapes in Vegas
Main character energy corset dresses for all the bad b*tches out there
And a ton more.
Peter Simmonds is changing the upcycled accessories fashion trajectory. The designer upcycles everything from Stussy hoodies and joggers to custom gloves and bags and has even started designing nylon shopper jackets and vests, but my favourite piece has to be this reworked handmade Arc'teryx trapper hat. It's exactly the kind of thing I'd imagine going hiking or hunting in if both of those activities didn't repulse me so much.
These Miu Miu FW23 kitten heels are the purrrr-fect winter shoe. I know they are two different colourways and are supposed to be worn separately, but I'm kind of obsessed with how they look paired together like this. It's better this way, trust me. And I like that this is a perfect example of how being an oddball is totally a vibe. Those that get it, get it.
Do you ever just stumble across a really random, really niche piece of clothing you never knew you needed? But now you've seen it you don't know how your wardrobe will survive without it? Well, that's how I feel about this anatomical heart balaclava by Kazclops. Winter is coming after all and I'm looking to keep cosy this season — this is kind of like wearing your heart on your sleeve, but on your head instead.
This Acne Studios Spring 2024 bag from the women’s collection is making me feel some type of way and I can't really explain it. Imagine wearing this with the full monochromatic red runway look, blood-red nails, sheer red pantyhose and red lipstick to match. Icons only please and thank you.
I discovered Blue_Movement on my Instagram Explore page and I'm so glad I did. This Japanese brand reworks, remakes and upcycles one-of-a-kind pieces using a traditional Japanese vintage indigo dyeing process. Its heritage, craft and culture given a modern spin using traditional techniques, and I hope I'll be lucky enough to get my hands on a piece, such as this Japanese tenugui shirt, one day soon.
Ariel from The Little Mermaid would be so into this shellfish hair clip from the body decoration lab meets experimental jewellery brand YVMIN. Considering that the duo behind this label, launched in 2013, are both Central Academy of Fine Arts grads, it is no surprise that the conceptual cuteness of this clip has an artistic undertone.
This Mirror Palais pink dress is giving main character energy but make it soft and sensual. It's giving vintage with a dash of elegant charm, its giving Cottagecore with a smidgen of Barbie and a side of serial killer Debbie Jellinsky from the Addams Family Values but make it high fashion. It's just giving.
Sean Wotherspoon is one of the most famous sneakerheads on the planet at this point. And this time, he's back at it again using his design talents and artistic flair reimagining the Adidas Gazelle in hemp and mushroom leather featuring extensive embroidery all over. I want a pair of these, very very badly.
This shirt is dope. Like, super duper dope. After doing some digging I realised this was a collaboration between a Brazilian brand and a fashion mag, and now I love it even more. This had me wondering if you could have a t-shirt with a collage of any fashion icon of your choosing, who would it be and why? Let me know in the comments.
Imagine throwing dice in Vegas wearing this "Life's A Gamble" dice watch by Frank Miura — that’s a good mental image right? I've seen Reddit threads about this watch, I've seen people battling it out on eBay to snap it up and I get it. I think if I owned this watch I'd make it my entire personality and let the haters hate.
MAINS by SKEPTA is one of those fashion brands that wasn't firmly on my radar until this year, even though Skepta is an icon on the British rap and grime scene and the brand has been about since 2017. Its first runway show at LFW in September helped put MAINS on the map, and I for one am very much into the Miami references and "hood luxury" meets sportswear vibe they are all about. This pair of 70s-inspired sunnies in particular caught my eye.
Who wants to walk through life wearing ordinary footwear when you can move about in bedazzled sneakers featuring a belt buckle so big you'd think a cowboy had just entered the room? Safe to say I'm very, very into this trippy pair of custom Vans Knu Skool BB (Belt Buckle) by Caterina Mongillo. This is hip hop and skate fashion colliding in the best way possible.
You should stop by…
Toronto: its always a pleasure going into a KITH store. I've visited destinations in both Paris and New York, and I like the part streetwear mecca, part art installation, part cosy but chic cafe vibes. The store has now landed in Canada with a flagship location in Toronto that will carry will carry men's, women's, kid's apparel and accessories, along with Kith Treats and Sadelle's.
London: opening in June 2024, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum is partnering with supermodel Naomi Campbell on an exhibition titled ‘Naomi’ that will chart her career in the fashion world while featuring items from both her extensive personal wardrobe, and iconic runway looks from designers who played a pivotal role in her career.
Osaka: the latest Arc'teryx flagship store has landed in Osaka's Shinsaibashi neighbourhood, and the crowning glory at the top of the store is the brand's the first-ever Arc'teryx café. Bougie hot dogs, Canadian snacks and Japanese treats are on the menu, and the clothes on offer look pretty good too.
