I have exciting news to share: You can now read Fashion Tingz in the new Substack app for iPhone!
Hey Fashion Tingz peeps, happy new year!
To kick off 2023 I'm coming at you with a short and sweet round-up of my favourite pieces of content from 2022.
I can't start this edition of Fashion Tingz without talking about the fashion icon that is BadgalRiri. She shook things the hell up with her streetwear meets luxury take on maternity dressing, and if this wasn't the breath of fresh air that fashion needed then I don't know what is. Note how other, lesser famous pregnant folk jumped on the bandwagon as soon as RiRi did but without the same level of success and authenticity.
One of my favourite pieces of long-form content was where I explored how fashion brands can remain cool in an era that seems to prioritise hype over substance. Fashion is fickle, we all know that, but with the fashion sphere currently divisive and divided the next chapter of cool may look a little different to what you are used to seeing.
Counterfeit luxury pieces manage to hold a certain amount of allure and desirability at a time when big name designers are losing cultural clout (and revenue in the process). As the cost of living crisis bites people are dipping their toes into the world of fake luxury, and I doubt this is something that's going to slow down anytime soon.
In October I interviewed the founders behind Sane Active, a minimal eco-conscious brand that goes hard on the gorpcore trend. I love talking to fashion industry insiders and getting to the heart of what makes them tick, and this was a refreshing interview that offers an inside scoop on the brand and the direction they're heading in next.
2022 saw the launch of 'All The Vibes', a monthly slot where I let readers know all of the recent fashionable goings-on that should be on their radar. I liked this issue with Jerry Steinfield in his hypebeast era, and this issue with Ryan Gosling entering his Gucci gang phase and Coperni’s spray paint fashion week spectacle.
Another format that launched last year was 'Hot Takes' where I explore and analyse whatever’s going on in fashion in a relatable and helpful way, basically my bullet point thoughts on fashion's hottest issues. This gets into the good, the bad, and the ugly. First off was analysing how fashion month may now be out of touch, and following hot on its heels was a post that unpacked fashion's relationship with the metaverse.
2022 was a bumper year for Fashion Tingz and 2023 is set to be even better. You heard it here first, this year I'll be notching up the publishing schedule to twice a week! Where my schedule allows you'll be receiving even more curious and curated fashion content right in your inbox, and I'm pumped that you are on this journey with me - I can't wait to see how we build this thing together.
On that note, I'd like to hear from you. To give you the content that you want, that you really really want, tell me what you want to see more of in 2023. Do you want more long-form essays or medium/short-form pieces? What topics haven't I covered yet that you think I should? What posts work for you and what posts don't, and why?
Honestly, I'm all ears, and your feedback is what matters most in shaping Fashion Tingz to be a destination that you can trust and rely on to explore fashion's cultural and aesthetic awakening in a fun and helpful way.
